Here are the images of my manuscript for our first project.

  1. Hey,

I thought it was clever to use a bible verse on the text page. I loved your initial/carpet page because there was so much detail just like manuscripts we had discussed in class. I loved the bird silhouettes that are incorporated into the letter since one doesn't notice them immediately. Overall, well done.

  2. Jess,
Your page carpet page was really great. The use of color (especially the blue, red, and gold) reminded me of the Book of Kells as well as some of the later Romanesque prayer books we looked at in class. Additionally I think you did a really great job of working in images into your embellished initial.

  3. This is SO you! I loved how you clearly took ideas of knot work and spirals and imagery from the illuminated manuscripts we studied in class, and you clearly turned it into your own! The colors and imagery are awesome! Great Job!

  4. This is some crazy business. There's a lot going on that it really takes time to discover all the little details you've buried in your carpet page, much like the carpet pages we studied. The colors are very Book of Kells, but I would also argue there's some Spanish illuminated color inspiration in there as well. You've brought the overall feel of the carpet page to your text page with the design of the capital A. It's a very abstract take, but very enjoyable.

  5. This looks really great!

Your carpet page is certainly the strongest part of your work. The colors are kind of a mixture of celtic and spanish illumination, but it is very successful regardless. The style of the A on your text page is fitting and brings the carpet page in, but I think you need a bit more color on the text page. I like how you left lines under the text, it reminds me of the illuminations we looked at in class. The floral designs, and swirls look very good. I also like how you avoided knot work, because everyone in class seemed to do that except for you, way to be unique!

  6. I love how many various patterns you incorporated into your carpet page! I liked that you went in a more abstract direction, similar to some of the carpet pages in the Book of Durrow. Like several other class members, I love that there is so much going on in the illustration that it takes a good look to even notice many of the details. Good job!

  7. I really liked all of the little details on your carpet page. You definitely put your own style into the work and I like all of the bright colors. Your page reminded me of this one below because of all of the details and the overall shape that you used.

  8. I like your carpet page quite a bit, the dense patterns remind me of some of the Celtic manuscripts, but your font for the initial is more modern, it's a nice mix. The subtlety of the humans and birds worked into it is very nice too. I also really like your capital on your text page, it again feels like a modern take on the Celtic patterns that could probably be turned into a design for a shirt or a tattoo.
